Week 2

Ahhhh! I almost forgot to blog this week!

Well, Week 2 just showed how as a teacher, you have to have a Plan B because there will be times when things do not go as planned when using technology. I have learned you can not solely depend on technology in lesson plans. Just keep calm and move on or make some adjustments when needed.

Reading through the first three chapters, I saw familiar terms, but also terms there were new to me. One was constructionist. I know now that it is define as a point of view where readers, who are typically students, process the language through their own experiences. I would use this kind of approach to teaching and encourage students to create connections while they are reading to reading. Anecdotal record keeping was one that I was somewhat familiar, but once reading about it, it came back to mind. This is tracking of a certain student's development and I also think it would be useful in my classroom because I can see progress or no progress and keep it in a portfolio for record.

In chapter 2, much of the terms I was familiar and put into use when I student taught. I definitely learned what effective learning looks like and plan on using that in my classroom. I plan to have a positive classroom culture and daily structure because my students loved it. They were always following the daily routine, but there were many days where day had to be switched around, and those days were crazy!

From chapter 3, I was familiar to the terms. Again, most terms I have seen in my own experiences. One unique observation from student teaching, once students are in fourth or fifth grade, there is no word wall, but more like word study where they learned the phonics and do spelling activities. If I get a job in the lower grades, I will use a word wall because it helps the students expand their vocabulary. One of the terms we talked about in class was morning message, which is something I always liked as a student and as a teacher. Students feel special, especially if you write an announcement or message that it is their birthday on the Smartboard. My cooperative teacher did not write a morning message, but instead she did it verbally because they switched for class 10 minutes after the bell rang.

Questions:
What terms were new to you guys? What did you find interesting from the first three chapters?

Comments

  1. As a teacher you do always need to be prepared for the unexpected because you cannot predict what might happen. I also did not know the term for constructionist. I did learn it is the same as constructivist which I knew a little bit. When you think about it, there are many words that are different but have the same meaning. "Look-say" was a term that was new to me, however, when I read what it was I had heard it called sight words. Teachers often use sight words when teaching vocabulary. When I observed a Kindergarten class then were working on some sight words such as (and) and (the). I think sight words are important because not every word can be sounded out sometimes you just need to know it.

  2. Hi Sandy! I feel the same way about the words from the list. So many of them I thought I hadn't heard of but they were actually just different from whT I had learned before. For example...I talked about sight words in my blog post even though the text called them something different.

  3. I had a handful of terms that were new to me. Which was surprising because I have been taking at least one reading/language arts class, sometimes 2, for the past year in each session. Who knew there were so many required reading classes. Looking at the terms, there were several that I actually knew that were just called something else. I did know what look-say was though, because the last teacher I observed used that term and I even asked her what it was....it is just like sight words. All three chapters were great starters for this class.

  4. I had almost forgot to reply! What a crazy week it has been!! I love how things went in class tonight because you are so right that WILL happen in the classroom at times and we have to figure out how to get past that. The four block term was new to me. I have dealt with daily 5 a lot but not four block so that was nice to learn about in these chapters. I just love learning new ways to teach and learning anything new!!
