Word Walls
Word Walls.
I think Word Walls add on to the classroom especially in an elementary school setting.
From Kindergarten where they start learning how to spell words.....

To even high school where a teacher teaches a certain subject only.
Words walls are useful for all ages. It is available information for students to use. Word walls are there to increase students' vocabulary throughout the school year.
Once I get my own classroom, I do plan on using word walls. I have seen my cooperative teachers use creative kinds of walls and it seemed that students enjoyed them. Word walls can also help students with their spelling because the vocabulary on the wall are typically the words they will use in everyday basis.
I also think it would be helpful in reading. If they know what the "sight word" or "word wall", they will be capable of increasing their reading level. I have also seen teachers using word walls to plan out literacy activities for students to know them better. Lastly, I think word walls are a great way to build phonics and seeing patterns among words.
Questions: Do you think word walls be mandatory in elementary classrooms? If you were to use a word wall in your classroom, how would you choose which words to pick?

I couldn't agree with you more! I love word walls. I do think they should be mandatory although I think when you HAVE to do something it takes away some of the fun. I plan on using a sight word wall and a math wall in my classroom someday. I think the idea of using post it notes so you and the students can add and take away words is a great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteI see what you are saying. I guess each teacher will have their unique teaching style and that will determine how they will use the words walls (if they decide to use them).
DeleteI LOVE the idea of incorporating word walls in high school classrooms. Word walls might seem childish... but let's be honest how many times have even we (as college students) wondered how to spell a word?! And there are so many content-specific vocabulary words (like in math and science) that word walls could be so helpful. I think all elementary classrooms should have word walls - just to give students that exposure to vocabulary. I think I would choose words that students are continuously asking me how to spell. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, I am one of those students who are always looking up words! I just think in elementary, students need to be exposed to the words and use as resource for reading and writing. I do not remember in my high school years my teachers using word walls, but if I was in school right now, I would really like that my teacher had them up. It could be helpful in subjects in science or math where it all kind of relate or work together.
DeleteI think word wall are great and plan to use them in my future classroom. You have some good examples of word walls. I also think they can be used for any age. The words I would put on my word wall would be words to increase there knowledge but that I also thought would be useful throughout the year. I think it is great to expand on a students vocabulary. When a student has a greater vocabulary they are more likely to succeed in school and to go through college. Not every student is a good speller and this is also a great way to encourage them to look up words without getting out a book.
ReplyDeleteI think word walls are so useful to students and I plan on having one in my classroom. However, I don't think they should be mandatory. Each teacher teaches differently and if one teacher doesn't like word walls how will he/she teach that with excitement or enthusiasm that gets his/her students excited about learning. That teacher may be better at helping them learn the words a different way. The words I would put up would be vocabulary words from lessons or words I'm constantly asked how to spell. :)
